I just turned on LTE on my iPhone 5 to see if AT&T has turned it on in Philadelphia yet, and to my surprise, for once, AT&T kept their promise. The speed is insane! I got 53mbps down, that’s more than double my Comcast connection at home! Wow!

Properly setting up iOS iMessage and FaceTime

Setting up iOS iMessage and FaceTime to properly receive messages and calls on all your email IDs and phone numbers (each phone number has to be on a separate iPhone) is actually quite simple if you take the time to do it. All that is necessary is to make sure all your IDs and phone numbers show up in the iMessage and FaceTime settings and are all tick marked:

If all your IDs do not show up, you can add more from the button below that says “Add Another Email”. For all your phone numbers (only numbers connected to an iPhone) to show up, you might need to toggle the iMessage or FaceTime switch on and off again (the switch is located in the same settings window). And then in the same place, set all your devices to use your iPhone number as your caller ID by tick marking it:

After this all your devices should receive all iMessages and FaceTime calls. Enjoy!

Note: that all your devices have to be running iOS6 and connected to your iCloud account for this to work properly.

Free up storage space on Apple's iCloud

One of the main things that iOS uses iCloud for is to store the backups of all the devices connected to that account. This is a big feature of iOS because it absolutely simplifies the process of setting up a new device. But it comes at a cost for most users, because over time the backups increase in size if left on default settings.
I always wondered why the backups kept increasing in size even though not much had changed on my devices, until I figured out the cause of this occurrence. As it turns out, by default iOS backups are set to backup everything including your camera roll.
Often times, the camera roll of an iPhone is more than a gigabyte by itself (depending on the amount of photos and videos), which is why, simply turning off camera roll backup will clear a huge amount of space on iCloud.
Doing this will also cause ‘restore from iCloud backup’ while setting up a new device to be a much faster process.
To turn off camera roll backup, go to ‘Settings’, then to the ‘iCloud’ section, scroll down to the bottom and go to ‘Storage & Backup,’ go to ‘Manage Storage’ and then select the device you are on. Scroll down to the ‘Backup Options’ section. In the list below, ‘Camera Roll’ should be the first item, switch off the on/off switch corresponding to it.
Obviously doing this will clear a lot of space on your iCloud account, but your camera roll will not be backed up. This means that if you get a new device and restore from backup, your pictures and videos will not transfer over. The way to get around this is to make sure your ‘Photo Stream’ is active on your iOS device and on your Mac or PC. This way, all your photos will automatically transfer over to your computer. Please note, that photo stream does not transfer videos, it only transfers photos, if you capture a lot of videos on your iOS device, you should connect it to your computer every once in a while to manually transfer videos.
Hopefully this will free up a lot of space on your iCloud account. Enjoy!

Fixing iOS6 Facebook contacts problem

In iOS6, Apple has integrated Facebook, meaning that if you go into settings and log into Facebook, many apps and services across iOS can use your account to let you post status updates and pictures without having to open the Facebook app. Similarly, the ‘Contacts’ and ‘Phone’ apps in iOS use this Facebook login info to get your Facebook contact info and try to do their best to merge it with your existing contact info. But for some reason, the Facebook contact info does not merge well and instead shows us confusing contact info.
The easiest and only way to fix this is to simply prevent your contacts from accessing the Facebook login info. For this, go to the ‘Settings’ app and then scroll down to the section that says ‘Facebook’, once there, scroll down and switch off the switch next to ‘Contacts’ in the section that says ‘Allow These Apps to Use Your Account:’ after doing this, close your settings app and go to your contacts and you will see that they are back in their original form. Enjoy!
